### Is yacht salary tax-free for New Zealanders?
Whether you need to pay tax in NZ depends on the number of days in a year you are in the country and where your ‘permanent place of residence’ is. IRD regulations classify you as a non-resident for tax purposes if you spend over 325 days outside of NZ in any 12-month period.

IRD will also classify you as a non-resident if you don’t have an ‘enduring relationship’ with NZ.

### What’s an enduring relationship with New Zealand?
We can work through this with you when planning your strategy. **Among things to consider are how often you return to New Zealand, whether you hold residential property in NZ, family and social connections, any economic interests such as investments you have here, local employment or business connections and whether you intend to return here to live.**

### Do I need to settle my non-residency status before leaving NZ?
Inland Revenue allows backdating to the first of the 325 days.  These do not need to follow each other.  We’ll help you understand and comply with this.
